Narrator — Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for nearly 274,000 of its 2022–2024 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs in the United States, citing a potential defect that could lead to a loss of braking power while driving — a serious safety concern that could increase the risk of crashes.
According to documentation released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves the front brake lines, which may have been improperly installed in a way that allows them to come into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. This contact could cause brake fluid leakage, potentially resulting in a loss of brake function over time.
The recall affects approximately 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators, totaling 273,789 vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2024. Despite the large number of vehicles involved, Ford estimates that only about 1% of these SUVs actually contain the defect.
In an official recall report dated Friday, Ford noted that it had received 45 warranty claims involving leaking front brake lines as of April 17, 2025. However, the company emphasized that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue at this time.
Ford Offering Free Repairs and Inspection
Ford is urging owners of potentially affected vehicles to visit their dealership for a free inspection and repair. Depending on the findings, technicians may need to replace the front brake line or the air cleaner outlet pipe if contact between the two parts is found.
Dealer notifications began on Wednesday, and owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between May 26 and May 30. Ford owners can check if their vehicle is affected by using the NHTSA’s recall lookup tool or Ford’s official recall portal. The automaker’s internal reference number for the recall is 25S47.
Ford spokesperson declined to provide additional comment beyond the information provided in the recall report.
Background and Broader Safety Context
This latest recall comes amid a broader industry push for increased automotive safety and regulatory oversight. In recent years, manufacturers have faced growing scrutiny over vehicle defects and software glitches, particularly as more advanced technologies are integrated into new models.
According to the NHTSA, over 1,000 vehicle recalls were issued in the U.S. in 2024, affecting tens of millions of vehicles. Braking system failures, in particular, are among the most serious and closely monitored issues due to their direct impact on driver and passenger safety.
Ford has faced several high-profile recalls in the past two years, including issues with electrical systems, rearview cameras, and seatbelt tensioners. The company has pledged to improve internal quality control and post-production testing to minimize risks to consumers.
How to Check if Your Ford Car Affected
Vehicle owners are encouraged to take proactive measures by checking their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on either the NHTSA website or Ford’s recall site. If your vehicle is part of the recall, it’s recommended that you schedule an inspection as soon as possible — even if no symptoms or warning lights are currently visible.
Brake fluid leaks can sometimes go undetected until the brake pedal feels soft or spongy, or braking becomes less responsive — both warning signs that should never be ignored.
As always, staying informed about recalls and addressing them promptly is a crucial part of vehicle ownership and road safety.Don’t be panic Stay safe Stay Aware
