Jets Legend Nick Mangold, 41, Passes Away Due to Complications from Kidney Disease
The New York Jets and the entire NFL community are mourning the loss of Nick Mangold, the legendary center who anchored the Jets’ offensive line for more than a decade. Mangold passed away Saturday night at age 41 due to complications from kidney disease, surrounded by his family.
Jets Chairman Woody Johnson confirmed the heartbreaking news, paying tribute to the player who defined an era of Jets football.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Johnson said. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, his wit, warmth, and loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Nick Mangold’s Brave Battle with Kidney Disease
Earlier this year, Mangold shared a deeply personal letter on social media, revealing his struggle with a genetic kidney condition that had worsened over time.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease,” Mangold wrote to his “NY Jets community.” “After a rough summer, I’m now undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
Despite his health challenges, Mangold remained positive and grateful, thanking his family for their support.
“This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me.”
An Icon of Consistency and Strength
Mangold, selected 29th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, quickly became the cornerstone of the Jets’ offensive line. Teaming up with left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, he helped shape one of the most reliable O-lines in the NFL.
Over his 11-year career, Mangold started 171 games for the Jets, including seven postseason appearances, and became known for his intelligence, toughness, and leadership. His dominance earned him seven Pro Bowl selections, two First-Team All-Pro honors, and a place in the Jets Ring of Honor.
Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson praised Mangold’s enduring impact both on and off the field:
“Nick was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership. His contributions were extraordinary — but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”

A True Jet, On and Off the Field
Mangold’s influence stretched far beyond the gridiron. His signature beard, humor, and down-to-earth nature made him a fan favorite long after his 2016 retirement. He was a fixture at team events, fan gatherings, and community initiatives — always representing the Jets with pride.
“Being able to finish my career here and play for one team means everything to me,” Mangold said in a 2023 interview. “This fan base is as passionate and loyal as they come. Once a Jet, always a Jet.”
Teammates Remember a Brother and Leader
Former Jets linebacker Bart Scott paid an emotional tribute to Mangold, describing him as both a teammate and family member.
“Teammates are the closest thing to family,” Scott said. “Nick represented the best of us in professionalism, humility, and performance. But his inclusion — his ability to see everyone’s value — was my favorite trait. I’ll miss my friend until we meet again.”
Ferguson echoed the sentiment, recalling their shared experiences both on and off the field.
“A big part of our lives was spent together — from games to family events,” Ferguson said. “I’m grateful I got to do life with him and his family. It’s a hard time.”

A Legacy That Lives On
Mangold was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — one for film and one for television — and was recently advancing in the voting process for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
Jets fans and teammates alike remember him not just for his dominance at the line of scrimmage, but for his humor, kindness, and loyalty — qualities that made him a true embodiment of what it means to be a New York Jet.
“On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization,” Woody Johnson said, “we offer our sincere condolences to Jenny, their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte — and all who loved Nick. He will forever be a Jet.”
Final Thoughts
Nick Mangold’s life and career were marked by resilience, leadership, and heart. From the roar of MetLife Stadium to his quiet battle off the field, he faced every challenge with courage and grace.
Rest in peace, Nick Mangold (1984–2025). Your legacy will forever live in the hearts of Jets fans and the NFL community. 💚
