After three years of anticipation, Sony has finally introduced the WH-1000XM6 noise-canceling headphones. While the gap since the XM5s is longer than expected, the XM6s aren’t about reinventing the wheel—they’re more of a refined evolution focused on performance, comfort, and subtle but smart hardware upgrades.
Unlike the bold redesign that came with the 1000XM5, the XM6 sticks to what works—same sleek design, but with meaningful under-the-hood enhancements.

Sony fans will feel right at home, though they might feel a bit of sticker shock: the new model now costs $449, $50 more than the XM5 and even pricier than Bose’s flagship QuietComfort Ultra. That’s a lot for headphones still made largely of plastic.
But that material choice isn’t about cheaping out—it’s about comfort. Like Bose, Sony prioritizes long-wear convenience for travelers, commuters, and deep-focus sessions. The weight is balanced, and the newly widened headband eases pressure on the crown, making all-day use much easier.
One of the most welcome design returns? Foldability. Sony brought back the hinged arms, allowing the XM6 to collapse and fit snugly into a newly redesigned, zipper-free carrying case. That case closes with a magnetic clasp—easy to use with one hand—and feels thoughtfully built. There’s a “correct” way to position the headphones inside, but once learned, it’s fast and efficient.
Other quality-of-life upgrades include:
Removable earcups for easy replacement
A round power button to differentiate from the ANC control by feel
Simultaneous charging and listening, though this requires two cables (USB-C for charging and 3.5mm for audio)
A more secure and compact carrying case that’s actually travel-friendly
Under the hood, Sony packed in a new noise-canceling chip and upgraded drivers. The XM6 boasts better ANC than the XM5—already one of the best in the industry—and Sony says it outperforms all rivals currently on the market. The transparency mode is still excellent and can be temporarily activated with a palm over the right ear cup, which is handy when someone’s talking to you.
Sound-wise, Sony took advice from its professional audio engineers and tweaked the tuning. Vocals sound clearer, and there’s added richness in the highs and mids, while the low-end still carries Sony’s signature thump. Audiophiles can fine-tune their experience using the built-in 10-band equalizer. While the AirPods Max still edge out the XM6 on clarity and soundstage, Sony’s option holds its own in terms of energy and punch.
Connectivity remains strong with Multipoint Bluetooth and Sony’s LDAC codec, ensuring high-resolution audio when supported.
Not all updates hit the mark, though. Sony introduced gimmicky spatial audio effects inside its Headphones Connect app, with simulated environments like cafes or cinemas. These are more novelty than necessity and are easy to ignore. It feels like a placeholder for something more useful Sony has yet to invent.
On the call-quality front, Sony’s new beamforming mics—six total—are powered by AI to reduce background noise and zero in on your voice. The improvement is subtle but noticeable. As for battery life, you’ll still get 30 hours with ANC on and 40 with it off—no change from the previous model.
