The Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday, Oct. 30, that the Duke of York, 65, will no longer be referred to as “Prince” or “His Royal Highness.” Moving forward, he will be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

“His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew,” the palace said in an official statement. “Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.”

👑 The End of an Era for the Duke of York

Born into royalty as the second son of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Andrew carried the title of Duke of York since his 1986 wedding to Sarah Ferguson. He was also styled as Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh — honors that are now rescinded under the King’s Royal Prerogative.
Additionally, Andrew has been stripped of his membership in the Order of the Garter and his Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order, two of Britain’s highest chivalric distinctions.
The palace further announced that Andrew will lose his longtime residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor, where he has lived for decades.
“Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation,” the statement read. “These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

⚖️ Prince Andrew’s Allegations and Fallout

The decision follows renewed public scrutiny of Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
In 2019, Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties after his controversial BBC Newsnight interview in which he discussed his relationship with Epstein. The backlash was immediate and lasting, prompting Queen Elizabeth to strip him of his military titles and royal patronages in January 2022.
While Andrew has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual misconduct, the fallout continued. He settled a civil lawsuit with Virginia Giuffre in 2022 for an undisclosed sum. Giuffre, an Epstein victim who passed away in April at 41, had accused Andrew of sexual abuse when she was 17 — claims he has always denied.
The latest decision by King Charles is said to have full support from senior royals, including Prince William, and is viewed as a final step in distancing the monarchy from Andrew’s controversies.

📜 Historical Context

The last time a member of the British royal family was stripped of titles in such a manner was over a century ago — Prince Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale, lost his British honors under the Titles Deprivation Act of 1917 after siding with Germany during World War I.
Even when King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson, he was still granted the title Duke of Windsor — highlighting just how rare this moment is.

👩‍👧 The Impact on His Family

While Andrew’s personal titles have been revoked, his daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie will retain their royal titles, in accordance with the 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V.
As Buckingham Palace emphasized, the move comes with compassion for victims:
“Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.”
With his royal privileges now officially revoked, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor begins a life outside the monarchy — marking a defining and somber chapter in modern royal history.
